I had gone through some of my childhood picture a few weeks ago and came across the pictures of celebrating May Day when I was in Kindergarten. I thought I should post them on May 1st, but of course forgot about it, until Bridget mentioned it on her blog. In May of 1978(yes that means I'm getting old), I participated in a Maypole dance. One girl and one boy were selected from each Kinder class to do this. All of the girls wore white dresses and the boys wore white shirts and pants.
Each "couple" was given a specific color ribbon that represented their class. I was in Mrs. Mudd's class and we were assigned the pink ribbon. I felt so lucky to get the pink one, but my partner, Bobby Slaughter(I had a secret crush on him), probably wasn't equally as thrilled. I ore a pink bow in my hair and a pink sash around my waist. He wore a pink bow tie and cumberbun(homemade versions of these). We then held onto long pink ribbons that were attached to the pole. I can't remember the actual dance itself, but I do remember weave in and out, over and under and when the dance was over the pole was a weave of all different colored ribbons. I have a picture of my grandmother doing a maypole dance in the 1910s that looks very similar to yours.
I don't think I've ever celebrated May Day but after reading your post along with Bridget's and elizabeth's from Hawaii, I'm starting to think I'm missing out on something!
That is the cutest thing I have ever seen! I LOVE May Day, even though I have never really celebrated it or seen a real maypole. I just love spring and May Day always meant the real beginning of spring to me. When I went into labor on May first I could not have been more thrilled...it was the prefect birthday! So even though I don't celebrate May Day...I get to celebrate a birthday!! Cute picturtes!!
From that side view you really look like Maci (or she like you). I think you all should start some May Day traditions in your own homes. It is a lot of fun.
I don't think I've ever celebrated May Day. I think I will start next year :)
Fun May Day pics. I don't think I ever celebrated, even as a kid. But growing up around New Orleans, Mardi Gras always steals the show! I'm glad you liked your birthday month gift. I soooo thought of you (and Jenny, of course) when I saw that diet coke charm! Have a fabulous month!
I have never celebrated May Day either. I can't believe you were able to rummage through your box to find such great May Day photos. Too cute.
I have never heard of May day but I loved your old pictures and I loved learning about it! So cute!!
O.K. that is the most amazing May Day post I've seen. I WISH I had been in a May Day dance with a May Day pole. Lucky you, what a memory.
What great pictures of May Day! When I was little we used to take flowers to neighbors, and friends. We would put them on their porch step, ding the doorbell, and run. It was supposed to be a suprise from us to them.
What a sweet post! We never celebrated May day officially, but would always go out and pick wild flowers on that day and give it to my mom!
this is so amazing! i love it.
did you see Stacy's blog about photos of her grandma.
you would think with all my ribbon, i should be doing this. next year!!
That is so stinkin cute! I always wanted to do a maypole like that, but never did. I love that you found those photos!
